September 2027 intake

West Walker Primary School

Starting school is the beginning of something brilliant.

Reception is one of the most important years in your child’s education. It’s where confidence, curiosity, and a love of learning take root. With a team that knows every child by name and a strong focus on talk and play, we make sure it’s a wonderful start for children and for families.

About Reception at West Walker Primary School

Where learning starts with play and relationships.

Reception is your child’s first full year of school, and it lays the foundations for everything that follows. Children work across all seven areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, building the knowledge, skills, and dispositions that will carry them through primary school and beyond.

At West Walker, we take a play-based approach because the evidence is clear: this is how young children learn best. Play in our Reception class is rich, well-planned, and purposeful. Our practitioners are skilled at extending learning through careful questioning, the right resources, and an environment that invites curiosity at every turn.

Reception children have daily Read Write Inc phonics and plenty of time to talk, play and explore. Our curriculum recognises the different experiences every child brings through the door, and builds pride in where we live, including Walker’s shipbuilding heritage.

Mrs Kerry Marshall
"Reception is where children grow in confidence and discover how much they can do. We get to know every family well, so every child has a brilliant first year of school."
Early reading
Systematic phonics, from day one.
In Reception, children begin a systematic synthetic phonics programme, the approach to teaching reading that the Department for Education recommends. We follow Read Write Inc and deliver daily phonics sessions that are fast-paced, multi-sensory and fun.
Getting ready
Helping your child feel ready for Reception.
Small things you can do at home in the run-up to September make a real difference.
Independence
Practising putting on coats, using the toilet independently, and managing simple fastenings.
Sharing stories
Reading together every day builds vocabulary and a love of books before phonics even begins.
Following instructions
Simple two-step instructions at home help children settle into classroom routines faster.
